All you need is a slow cooker, some chicken breasts, onions, garlic, tomato sauce, spices, and a few ingredients to make a delicious and comforting dish.

Chicken Jalfrezi Origin

Chicken Jalfrezi has become a popular restaurant dish, but its roots are a little hazy. There is a rumor that it was invented by Lord Marcus Sandys (pronounced Sands in a beautiful bit of British Upper Class twitism) while he was Governor of Bengal during the British Raj.

What Is Chicken Jalfrezi Made of?

A tomato-based curry cooked with boneless chicken chunks, bell peppers, and onions is known as Chicken Jalfrezi. Jalfrezi, unlike most traditional curries, is frequently stir-fried rather than simmered or braised. Instead of being soupy like Classic Chicken Curry, it has a thick, semi-dry feel.

This slow-cooked chicken jalfrezi recipe is a delicious and easy way to prepare this popular Indian dish. The chicken is simmered in a flavorful tomato and onion sauce, making it perfect for a weeknight meal.

How to make a delicious slow-cooked Chicken Jalfrezi

Serves: 4
Cooking time: 40 minutes
Level: Beginner

Ingredients

  • 4 chicken breasts, cubed
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 green chillies
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 2 red chillies
  • 2 tbsp. plain flour
  • 2 red peppers
  • 2 tsp. garam masala
  • 2-1/2 tsp. medium curry powder
  • 1/2 tsp. chilli powder
  • 1 tsp. ground coriander
  • 1 tsp. ground cumin
  • 400 g chopped tomatoes or passata
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil

Instructions

Cover the chicken in the flour, seasoned with half of the salt, and fry in 1 tbsp. of oil until browned on all sides. Place into the slow cooker.

Finely slice the onion, deseed and finely slice the red and green chillies, and deseed and chop the peppers. Heat the remaining oil in the pan you cooked the chicken in and cook the onions until soft. Add the garlic, chillies and pepper, cook for another five minutes, add the curry powder and garam masala, fry for another minute, then add to the slow cooker.

Add the passata, chilli powder, coriander, cumin and remaining salt to the slow cooker. Stir well, set the heat to low and cook for six hours.

If the sauce is too thick, thin it with water. If it is too thin, thicken it with corn flour.

Although this recipe calls for a certain amount of vegetables, feel free to put whatever you like in – baby corn, carrots and spinach would all work well.
