High Achievers Are Goal-oriented

Being a high achiever requires that you are goal-oriented. Being a high achiever isn’t just about achieving goals. It’s also about being purposeful. Some people have a sense of purpose and can get more done than others (if they set off to do something big). But on average, everyone who is active and goal-oriented will have more goals than can be achieved in a single lifetime (this is what makes the lives of high achievers so interesting).

We think it’s essential to be goal-oriented because it keeps us focused on what we want to achieve in this life. The fact that we don’t know what that may look like is irrelevant to our motivation — it doesn’t matter if we achieve them; we want to be on the path towards them.

The example I like to use is that of Steve Jobs. He had many goals — great products, great company, great team, great customers — but the thing that made him so successful at getting those things done was not his product or his company; it was his ability to focus on these things day after day after day and become personally motivated by them.

High Achievers Are Persistent

It is a well-known fact that you must persist in getting ahead. If you are not, then by definition, you won’t make it. Persistence is one of the most underrated yet essential skills in business and life.

High Achievers Set Priorities

The term “setting priorities” refers to a decision about what to do next, and it is the process of deciding which issues are the most important and how to prioritize them. This sounds like a simple enough process, but many pitfalls can arise from making this decision incorrectly.

Hopefully, you won’t find yourself in such situations. The most common pitfalls tend to be:

  • We do not have enough time or energy for our priorities.
  • We consider more than one priority at once.
  • Our priorities might conflict with each other (apparently, there is always one right way to prioritize your work).
  • We do not understand the consequences of our decisions (often because we are not clear on what will happen if we make a particular choice).
  • We make decisions without having all the information available (like what would be considered “good” evidence for different choices).

So, when should you set your priorities? This question has many answers. Some say “once a week” only if the weekend is free. Others say “once an hour” only if you have something else going on! Some say “once per day” only if they have other things to do! And some others suggest simply reflecting on your own life and taking stock of how much time you spend on different activities.

For example, a recent survey found that 40% of Americans spent 2 hours/day listening to music while 8% spent 5 hours/day reading books, 15% spent 2 hours/day on household tasks, 9% spent 3 hours/day on personal finances; 6% spent 5 hours/day on social networking; 5% spent 7 hours/day while doing their jobs; 4% of adults consume 12-15 hours per day watching TV.

Decide what matters most to you – this list may help clarify things for you – and be disciplined about checking off these items as best as possible in your time charts. If you have 10 minutes free on a busy morning, choose something else at least once that takes you at least 10 minutes (if not more).

If you don’t think this works for you, use professional advice from friends or family members who have been successful in their careers.

High Achievers Are Proactive

Sure, we all want to be successful. But how? How do you get ahead in life? And what’s the secret behind it?

These are the same questions I ask when determining what content to write. Do you have a strategy for getting ahead in life? Or maybe you’re not sure where you want to go, but you know you have no hope if you don’t even try.

I think being proactive is a good thing. It means recognizing opportunities, putting yourself in a position where the odds are favorable, and then taking action to make it happen. But how do you do that?

  • Know your strengths: this is especially important if your goal is personal growth.
  • Don’t take no for an answer: always answer yes or no when someone asks if they can help.
  • Keep learning: learn new things and keep up with the latest trends and technologies.
  • Stay flexible: adapt as circumstances change and treat things sporadically as opportunities arise.
  • Be on the lookout for new opportunities: these are often available just around the corner (if only you could see them).

High Achievers Take Initiative

Are you the kind of person who likes to be constantly active and in control of your life? Do you want to have a plan and work towards goals? If so, you’re most likely what we call a high achiever. And guess what? High achievers tend to take the initiative.

The initiative is the act of taking the lead and moving forward. It’s about being proactive instead of reactive. And it’s this quality that sets high achievers apart from the rest. They don’t wait for things to happen. They make them happen.

One reason why high achievers are so successful is that they’re not afraid to take risks. They know that if they want something wrong enough, they have to be willing to try to get it. And that means sometimes taking the first step, even when they don’t know exactly what comes next.

High Achievers Collaborate and Delegate

One of the best ways to increase your achievement is to work with your colleagues. And, if you have high achievers on your team, you can expect them to share some of their secrets to success.

One of the most underrated sources of productivity among high achievers is their peers. Their advice, knowledge, and insights can go a long way toward helping you reach your goals and be more successful than before. To get this group, you’ll need to do some research first. You may not be able to discover everything about the world’s top achievers alone. But it doesn’t mean you cannot gain valuable information from them!

Here are a few tips for getting ahead in life:

  • Start by asking yourself, what makes someone become a high achiever?
  • Share with others the things that made you successful.
  • What was it about success that made you decide on specific strategies? Or what strategies did they use?

So, take time out and ask yourself these questions: Are there any people that inspire me or help me achieve specific goals? Who inspires or helps you accomplish specific goals in life? If so, share your experiences with these people! If not, why not? Asking these questions will help boost your self-esteem by showing you are capable and willing to learn from those around you.

Conclusion

Many people have dreams of becoming a success in their life. Many aspire to reach the top of their profession, and some even go so far as to say that they want to be world-class.

And while some high achievers have the support of high-powered mentors, many others find the road to success lonely. Their path looks different from anyone else’s because they are different from everyone else—they have skills and experiences that no one else has (or can) imitate.

The road to success is not a straight line but an interweaving series of steps. And it takes hard work, dedication, grit, and grit again—and luck along the way.

Hopefully, you will learn something new about your career path and how to get ahead with these principles.
